Two diamonds can look almost identical on a product page yet arrive with very different grading documents. One may carry a GIA assessment, another an IGI report, and the terminology printed beside color, clarity and cut may not even follow the same format.

That makes GIA vs IGI less a question of which acronym sounds more prestigious and more a question of what information the report actually gives you.

This distinction has become especially relevant for lab-grown diamonds. GIA changed its system for colorless to near-colorless laboratory-grown diamonds in October 2025, while IGI continues to provide detailed grading using familiar color and clarity scales.

For buyers in Spain comparing an engagement ring, loose diamond or custom jewelry order, understanding that difference can make online comparison much easier.

The Two Laboratories Do Not Present Lab-Grown Diamonds the Same Way

GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, and IGI, the International Gemological Institute, both provide independent gemological assessment services. Their reports help document characteristics that cannot be judged reliably from a photograph alone.

The biggest current difference appears in how they handle many lab-created diamonds.

Since October 1, 2025, GIA has used a Premium or Standard overall quality assessment for qualifying loose, colorless to near-colorless laboratory-grown diamonds of at least 0.15 carats. The classification considers color, clarity, polish, symmetry and, for round brilliants, cut. GIA also laser-inscribes qualifying stones with “Laboratory-Grown” and the assessment number.

IGI takes a different approach. Its laboratory-grown diamond reports continue to document the 4Cs, including familiar grades such as D–Z color categories and clarity grades ranging from Internally Flawless downward. Reports can also identify laboratory-grown origin and may note the growth process or treatments where applicable.

That distinction matters during comparison shopping.

The table does not make either laboratory automatically superior. It shows that the documents serve comparison shopping differently.

What “Premium” and “Standard” Mean on a Current GIA Assessment

A buyer accustomed to seeing combinations such as D/VVS2 or G/VS1 may initially find GIA’s current terminology unusual.

For a lab-grown diamond to receive GIA’s Premium classification, it must satisfy the Premium requirements across the assessment criteria. These include D color, Very Very Slightly Included clarity or better, Excellent polish and symmetry, plus Excellent cut for a round brilliant.

The Standard category permits qualifying combinations down to J color, Very Slightly Included clarity, Very Good polish and specified symmetry or cut thresholds. A laboratory-grown diamond falling outside the minimum Standard criteria does not receive this particular GIA quality assessment.

This creates a practical trade-off: GIA gives the buyer a simplified overall quality designation, while IGI gives more granular grades that can be convenient when comparing individual diamonds.

Why Detailed Grades Can Matter More Than the Laboratory Name

Imagine two oval lab-grown diamonds advertised at the same carat weight.

If both have IGI reports, you may be able to compare their exact color and clarity grades immediately. Yet those grades still do not tell you which oval will look better on the hand.

You would also want to inspect:

  • measurements rather than carat weight alone;
  • length-to-width ratio;
  • visible bow-tie effect;
  • symmetry;
  • table and depth proportions;
  • inclusion location;
  • video or high-resolution imagery.

A 2.00-carat diamond with poor weight distribution may face up smaller than another diamond of identical weight. IGI itself notes that diamonds sharing the same carat weight do not necessarily appear the same size.

Certification should therefore confirm specifications, not replace visual evaluation.

Does an IGI Report Make a Lab-Grown Diamond Less Desirable?

No grading laboratory’s name should be used as a shortcut for deciding whether a particular diamond is attractive.

For shoppers researching lab grown diamonds, the useful approach is to combine the report with actual stone measurements, cut characteristics and visual inspection rather than judging a diamond from the certificate heading alone.

IGI has been grading laboratory-grown diamonds for many years and documents their origin and 4Cs. GIA also evaluates laboratory-grown material, but its current system deliberately uses different terminology for many colorless to near-colorless lab-grown stones.

So an IGI D/VS1 and a current GIA-assessed stone should not be compared simply by trying to translate one report label directly into the other.

The Report Matters Differently for Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds

This is where many GIA vs IGI comparisons become outdated.

Advice written before October 2025 may describe both laboratories as though their lab-grown reports use essentially parallel color and clarity grading formats. That is no longer accurate for GIA’s current colorless-to-near-colorless laboratory-grown quality assessment.

Natural diamond comparison is a separate issue and should not be confused with the current GIA lab-grown system.

Before ordering a diamond in Spain, check the report date, report type and laboratory rather than relying only on the grading organization’s logo.

What to Check Before Paying for the Ring

A certificate is most useful when you know which details require further investigation.

Ask the jeweler for the report number and verify it through the issuing laboratory. Then confirm that the report information corresponds with the diamond being sold.

For an engagement ring, also ask for the stone’s exact millimeter dimensions and evaluate how its proportions suit the setting. A high-set solitaire may give a different wearing experience from a bezel or low-profile design, regardless of the grading laboratory.

If a wedding band will eventually sit beside the engagement ring, consider basket height, prong placement and band clearance at the same stage. Certification tells you about the diamond; it does not tell you whether the finished ring will sit comfortably beside another piece.

The most useful GIA vs IGI decision is therefore not choosing a laboratory in isolation. It is understanding what its current report communicates, identifying what the document does not tell you, and using those details alongside cut quality, proportions, setting design and the diamond’s actual appearance.
